Graphics Phone Case Project
Illustrator Vector Patterns
Task 1:
For this task I have been given the theme of 90s music, in order to create my ideas I researched different events and songs which were part of that time as well as researching things that were brought out in the 90s and turning them into vectors through Adobe Illustrator! Then once we have done this we use ten images and ten words to create a repeat pattern
When on Illustrator I didn't have a lot of ideas for the theme of the 90's. The main image that game into my head also when searching it up on google was a game boy, to do this I used the line tool to create curves and shapes for the outline of the object, then using the rectangle tool to create the slight detailing as well as using the circle tool. I used music notes to emphasise this task of researching 90"s music and the years in general. Artists like Britney Spears and TLC were all famous around this era. I also looked at the fashion within this time frame to allow me to see the colours and style of fashion they were wearing. This task has allowed me to figure out the theme and artist I want to choose for my final design, the colours and what will appeal to young audiences within the artist fan base.
For this I researched many artists but over all I have chosen Noma Bar as inspiration for my work, his work has simple lines and shapes to make an image, for my phone case design I am planning to use simple curves and lines to make the design, shapes will also be included in the design. Here is some examples of his work:

Nirvana were massively popular in this era , many people adored their music, this ere did extremely well within the music industry and a lot of music today was influence by that in particular. |
Hairstyles have changed throughout the years but messy looks are now back in fashion, half up half down, messy curls and back combed is now hugely popular, mainly through teens. |
Task 2:
Research about your music theme
Final Outcome Proposal...
The artist that I have chosen for my phone case design is The Weeknd. I have chosen this artist because they have recently in the last couple of years become more famous around the world, especially in the UK. I have also chosen them for my design because I take an interest within their music and their style. I feel that many people would be interested in buying the product because this artist has been in the charts recently and had some famous hits within the charts, for example, "Starboy" and "The Hills".
This artist has been referred to as "The songbird of his generation" as well as the best musical act since Michael Jackson. The Weeknd then signed to Republic in in 2013 when he released "Kiss Land" which was then considered as his studio album. Then in 2014 he dropped a remix of Beyonce's "Drunk In Love" which he renamed "Often".
Shortly after then releasing two songs for the film "Fifty Shades Of Grey" making his song "Earned It" which rapidly became his first breakout song. Since then he has released songs like "The Hills" and "Can't Feel My Face".

I feel like many people will be interested in my work of the phone case because The Weeknd are a extremely popular artist selling out shows around the world and performing at almost every music award ceremony. I am intending to use a mixture of patterns and colours to emphasise the style and variety of sound he produces and releases.
Task 3:
In- depth appreciation about any artist of your choice.

Throughout his childhood he had two main musical influences, they ranged from traditional Ethiopian music to the "King of Pop" Michael Jackson. He dropped out of high school and then continued to explore his interest in music, releasing a free download of a song called "House of Balloons" in 2011. He then started to work with Drake on his album in 2011 and then landed a deal with Universal's Republic Records.
In 2015 He released his No1 album "Beauty Behind The Madness" which helped him rack up 7 nominations for the Grammy's and then winning for Best R&B performance for "Earned It" and Best Urban Contemporary Album, also bagging himself an Oscar nomination.

Advertising my phone case on social media, used hash tags to allow more people see it who are looking through the hash tag and it allows more people to view my work even if they don't follow me.
Task 4:
Creating a response.
When creating this case i used a range of different softwares to complete my case, i used a range of Adobe applications to create different styles and patterns. I mostly used Adobe Illustrator to add the colour and definition and I used photoshop to create the shaped and black outlines. I started off with using pencils and a fine liner to create my hand drawn design and then uploaded onto computer to enhance the drawn design. To be able to get the colours onto my design i used the paint bucket tool. The most successful thing that occurred throughout this process was the outline of the artist himself and the background contrast of patterns.
Task 5:

Evaluation
From my final design I decided to use bold colours within the writing, as well as using subtle colours for the outline and filling of the silhouette, I think that the use of colour is effective throughout my design because the less bold sections bring out the main image/ outline! For my text I decided to hand draw it rather than digitally create it, I only did this because I didn't really know what I wanted my writing to look like! I feel like this reflects my theme well because the colour of the letters matches the album/ single colours of most of the stuff he has released (seen in the screen grabs of his website) The image I used I would say is quite abstract as well as the fact it is hand drawn; to do this I got a photo online of a silhouette of the artist and simply step by step drew it out just by looking at the image.
I believe that my design appeals to a younger audience because it's not a generic phone case, the design is rather abstract and it carries a lot of personality within the colours and outlines, I also created the illusion of paint dripping from the camera and just below the writing- I did this to add detailing and a range of different lines and angles. If I could connect better with my target audience I would maybe get in touch with some extreme fans and ask what they like best about The Weeknd and what would attract them in an inspired design to allow me to connect with majority of the fans.

Production Process:
1. Paul set our assignment.
Our task was to design a phone case inspired by an artist of our choice but before anything we had to research a music era that we each randomly chose from a hat.
2. Researching the theme.
my theme I had to research was the 90s, I researched about the different artists during that period as well as the fashion throughout them years. Then made this into a vector pattern using illustrator.
3. choosing our own artist.
Once we chose our own artist we had to research into their background and how they started out, I then looked at the website to gather some inspiration for my work to help me gain ideas.
4. creating the artwork.
I designed three different cases and ended up mixing two of my ideas into one. To begin my design I drew an outline of a iPhone 6 case and hand drew out the design , then going over it with black pen to add more definition. Once I went over it with black fine liner I scanned it, cropped it and uploaded it into photoshop to finish the design.
5. uploading to social media.
Once I finished my final design I firstly ordered the case so I had an actual copy myself, then uploaded the finishing product on Instagram and Facebook.
6. Customers.
From uploading my design and creating the case I am now hoping to sell the product to those who want the case.
