Magazine Assignment
Task A:
S |
Learning outcome 1: Pre Production
For my magazine I will be intending to take photos of Leanne in the college studio, as my genre is fashion I will more be focusing on the clothing to attract to my target audience. For me to be able to carry out these images I will need a professional camera which I will most likely use the college cameras, I will need normal lighting from the college and a plain white background which is already set up in the college studio. My location is at college, I have previously used this studio from past photography work so I know exactly how everything works, I have chosen to use this for my shots because it's simple as I want the majority of the attention on the clothing items to appeal to fashion lovers.
If I were to change my location, model rather than using my own production I would have to consider the extra costs to carry out a photoshoot. This is why I decided to use Leanne and the college equipment for my magazine. When I started to research different prices of studios, camera equipment hire, models and makeup artists as well as clothing and prop hire I found that using your own facilities was the best option. For example to hire a studio for a couple of hours, although on websites I have looked into they don't show the prices on the website which means you have to email or call to get a quote.
For my final design I will edit my photos using photoshop, exploring different effects to find what fits right with my genre and to create the final design I will use photoshop to create the front cover and double page spread. For the legal side of my magazine I will only use my own photographs and writing to ensure there is no copyright risk.
For this section I will talk about the things you should know about making a magazine.
I have chosen my magazine genre to be about fashion aimed at the audience of teenagers and females, to be able to create this magazine I will need to think about the models I will use and where I will take the images. I also need to create a survey to allow me to decide what to add onto my front cover.
Task B:
Photography
taken using a camera, example of previous work |
For my final design I decided to use my sister as my model, this is because she keeps up to date with the latest trends, for example the ripped jeans and pale pink bomber. The hairstyle is also extremely popular which means that this front cover could attract many young people wanting to know a little more about fashion today.
here are some examples of test shots I took in the college studio.
For these I used Leanne who was originally going to be on my front cover, however, after the shoot it turned out that majority of the images were blurred or not in focus which mean I had to completely start from the beginning and find another model.
Task C:
Page layout research:
Page layout is part of graphic design that specifically deals with the arrangement and visual effects on a page like a magazine front cover. When researching page layout I looked at the different aspects for a magazine front cover and double page spread.
Masthead:
A masthead is the top third of the magazine which states what it is called, this is normally the most bold section of the front cover and is normally placed above the model or behind.
Cover lines:
These are short statements that are found within the cover of the magazine that pin point the articles inside, the purpose of these is to attract the reader into picking up the magazine, often there is a rather larger cover line which is sometimes placed under the mast head.
Headlines:
A headline is normally placed towards the top of an article/page within a newspaper and magazine.
Double page spreads:
Margins:
These are very important for any magazine design, for any double page spread you need to set up columns and to set these up you need to have margins. Margins contribute to the effect of the overall design. Margins allow the right amount of white space and they can convey a specific tone.
Columns:
A column is a piece or article within a newspaper or magazine, this is where a writer writes up a story and gives their own opinion set out in columns.
Orientation:
This is how the magazine is orientated and where specific things are placed within the double page spread.
Pull quotes:
A pull quote is a piece of writing that is taken from the main text of an article and is usually used as a subheading.
Typography and optical balance:
Typography is the "visual component of the written word" All visually displayed writing is classed as typography whether it's on a computer or on paper.
Page Layout research:
Photography research:
An example of a fashion photographer is Steven Meisel, he is from the United States and he is known as "One of the most iconic fashion photographers of all time, he remains to be one of the photographers who everyone wants to work with and he has photographed every cover of Vogue Italia since 1988."
Here is some examples of his work:

photography Evaluation:
For my magazine I decided on the genre fashion because it's one of the most popular genres out in the magazine industry. I chose fashion because I feel that the genre matches my day to day life, as well as all teenagers these days; fashion plays a huge part of many peoples lives and I feel like I would've been able to describe how that has changed over the years quite easily. The genre fashion matches my photographs because I tried to concentrate more on what the model is wearing rather than focussing it on their face making it reflect well with my chosen genre. Here is the main image I decided to use.
I wasn't originally deciding or planning on using this photograph for my magazine front cover, however, the shoot with Leanne ended up with the photos not being in focus and it just didn't look visually appealing so i had to plan out another set of photos to use. So I chose between a range of photos i took previously of my friends and my sister which displayed fashion in a way that would attract readers. For my photographs that were taken in the studio I used powered light boxes and a white back drop whereas my final front cover image I used natural lighting, making my sister stand facing the light to give the image good focus and colour and for the background I used a brick wall to give it an urban/ stylish vibe.
my research allowed me to get inspired for my own work because the images and examples I used for the examples give an edgy vibe which is what I was looking for with my own magazine style. The busy background on the magazine example I used turned out similar to the brick wall so I was inspired to use white blocks with writing on top to attract readers and to allow the writing to not get lost in the front cover.
With my final photos i didn't decide to edit the image for my front cover, only because I felt as if they looked better without them being edited, however, for my double page spread i decided to use an effect and change the images slightly as I felt that they look better. For my final designs I feel like I could massively improve it by setting out another photoshoot and thinking out my layout and how I will attract my target audience. From creating this magazine I have learnt skills such as photoshop, photography and editing skills.
